We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Spain by German artist Martina Klein (Dusseldorf, 1962).Titled “Displacement and distance”, the exhibition features paintings which are placed in relationship to each other, to the gallery space and to the movement of the viewer.
According to Klein the composition is not made in the painting itself but occurs in the space. The nine monochromes make a choreography of color planes which defines the space and gives it character. The multi-layered works do not remain on a single level but rather move into the gallery space with a sometimes larger, sometimes smaller projection. They produce a volume that lies in front of them and connects with the volumes in the surroundings. You as a viewer in the space are focusing the colors and distances by moving. So the displacement provokes the perception of your relations.
The goal of the exhibition is not to create complicated installations that are as carefully thought out as possible, but rather to make it possible to experience the space within which you move without hierarchical arrangements. The composition is structured topographically; it does not subscribe the idea of a metrical world. There is a precision in the installation but no compulsion. It is not written down, and hence it exists only in the given gallery surroundings for the specific period of the exhibition. After that, each painting will once again be autonomous and open to entering into new contexts.
Two squared canvases forming an angle appear at the left of the entrance. They are hanging on the wall, the wooden frame is visible, changing our usual sense of front or back. For other paintings, the canvas has been cut loose of the board on three sides and the fabric is longer than the board, becomes mobile so can go over the floor. Martina Klein’s fleeting canvases remind us the materiality of painting, of how the canvas is a material like any other. Not a surface to be filled nor an abstract glorified receptacle, but raw matter. The materiality of painting is put in motion, and becomes both what is to be seen as much as what shows. The paint is at once material and pure reflection with no function. It is applied by hand with a palette Knife: very viscous oil paint with lots of pigments, it is usually mixed well in advance in order to get the right shade and consistency. All gestural expression is restrained, only a few traces that cannot be avoided are visible. It is the perception of the material and his extension; it is a spatial vision, a reading of proportionalities, reading of relationships, a way of relating materials, surroundings with yourself.
