Parra & Romero is pleased to present a new group exhibition, born out of our interest in supporting the context of contemporary art in our country and with the intention of continuing to deepen one of the founding pillars of the gallery: investigating intergenerational dialogue and building bridges between local and international art.
Inhabiting the Fold takes its starting point from an attainable revision of Deleuze’s concept of ‘fold’, using it as a pretext to highlight the work of young Spanish artists whose practices are of particular interest to us and which we believe to expand the lines of conceptual art and minimalism, two currents that have marked the gallery’s program since its foundation. Through the work of five Spanish artists who investigate the spatial, the corporeal-material and the conceptual in their work, the exhibition aims to reflect on the occupation of physical and virtual space, the performative possibilities of the body through matter and the need to always return to the starting point.
The ‘fold’ described by Deleuze is divided into two curves, a lower and an upper one. Metaphorically, the upper one deals with the ‘soul’, while the lower one relates to ‘matter’. Deleuze argued that every fold contains new folds, from which we can deduce the fractal condition of the fold, its tendency to infinity and the cyclical nature of everything. Continuing with the metaphor we can understand the division from two sides:
The ‘soul’ = The virtual-analytical = Conceptual.
The ‘matter’ = The corporeal-performative = Minimalism
Although conceptual art and minimalism, as movements, have their evolution easily traceable to the beginning and middle of the last century, their porosity has allowed them to expand and mutate, adopting or adapting themselves to new contemporary concerns and problems.
The work of Fuentesal Arenillas, Almudena Lobera, Cristina Mejías and Rafa Munárriz dialogue from the coexistence with matter and language, from action and the transformation of the everyday.
