Clare Woods

Clare Woods (1972) vive y trabaja en Londres. En 1999 se graduó con un MA en Pintura en el Goldsmith's College de Londres. Desde entonces, su única obsesión ha sido pintar el bosque. Aunque la apariencia de sus pinturas sea abstracta y gestual, el proceso pictórico de Woods es puramente fenomenológico. Por las noches va al bosque y con su cámara fotográfica y un potente flash captura arbitrariamente fragmentos de esa realidad ajena a la artificialidad de las ciudades. Este proceso, donde el azar es el máximo protagonista, adquiere en el estudio de la artista otra dimensión. Woods traslada esas fotografías al cuadro midiendo y calculando todas las manchas que va realizando. Lo que aparentemente es gestual y espontáneo es todo lo contrario: Woods controla el azar, dotando a las manchas del cuadro de un valor alegórico. Cada mancha es símbolo de lo que Woods ha vivido en el bosque, por tanto, el resultado final del cuadro está ligado a la experiencia personal de la artista.

Clare Woods (1972) lives and works in London. In 1999 she graduated with an MA in Painting at Goldsmith’s College, London. Since then, her sole obsession has been to paint the forest. Though her paintings may appear abstract and gestural, her pictorial process is purely phenomenological. By night she goes to the forest and with her camera and a powerful flash she captures arbitrary fragments of that reality unrelated to the artificiality of cities. This process, in which chance plays the main role, acquires another dimension in the artist’s studio. Woods transfers these photographs onto the canvas measuring and calculating all the marks she makes. What in appearance is gestural and spontaneous is really just the opposite: Woods controls chance, giving an allegorical quality to the marks on the canvas. Each mark is a symbol of what she has lived in the forest, and so the final result of the painting is linked to the personal experience of the artist.
