Clare Woods:Cemetery Bends
Pilar Parra & Romero se complace en presentar “Cemetery Bends” la segunda
exposición individual de Clare Woods en España. Su trabajo puede describirse como un
mensajero que nos lleva donde los suburbios terminan. Clare Woods nos envía escenas de
espacios despoblados, senderos y caminos de tierra abandonados y marcas de lodo,
sin embargo la relectura que hace del paisaje británico no
concierne únicamente a la desolación. El uso de color casi fluorescente que escoge para
ilustrar un tema tradicionalmente oscuro sugiere celebración. En estas localizaciones describe la dualidad que sugiere un lugar “donde alguien puede ser concebido y de igual manera ser exterminado”, es este sentimiento de controversia dentro de las pinturas lo que nos atrae de su trabajo.
El paisaje británico fue relacionado con lo mítico y romántico. Clare Woods nos
pinta una vista alternativa a esta historia que es tanto sutil como poderosa. La experiencia de ver estos paneles horizontales se convierte en una percepción
escultural, en el sentido que luchamos por absorber sus superficies con una sola mirada.
Su contenido es narrado con sencillez, mientras la artista captura una cultura en transición simplemente hablando a través del paisaje.
El lenguaje que emplea, varía entre la representación y la abstracción, entre la precisión y lo accidental, una imagen versus, la naturaleza física de la pintura como escultura. El espectador no puede leer la superficie de una vez y es forzado a moverse para ver el trabajo completo, como al ver un bronce pulido, es atraído hacia una superficie que le refleja a él y a los que están a su alrededor.
Todos los trabajos están basados en una serie de collage, de fotografías que han
sido tomadas en el paisaje británico. Clare Woods encuentra este tema muy emotivo e inspirador y utiliza la pintura de manera inventiva para llevar al espectador a través de lugares seductivos y encantadores. Ella continúa una larga tradición que explora nuestra condición como personas enormemente urbanizadas y aun así fascinadas y afectadas por las representaciones del paisaje.
Clare Woods (1972) vive y trabaja en Londres y Herefordshire. Estudió en Bath College of Art (1991-94) y Goldsmith’s College (1997-99). Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en el Reino Unido, Europa y America y sus exposiciones individuales incluyen “New Paintings” en Southampton City Art Gallery (1997), Modern Art, Londres (2000, 2004 & 2008) y “Deaf Man’s House” en Chisenhale Gallery, Londres (2006).
Pilar Parra & Romero is pleased to present Cemetery Bends, Clare Woods second solo show in Spain. In this exhibition her work can be seen as a form of messenger. Where suburbia ends, Woods sends us scenes of depopulated spaces: overgrown paths, abandoned dirt tracks and mud markers at low tide.
For the artist however, her re-readings of the British landscape do not only concern desolation. The almost fluorescent use of colour that Woods chooses to illustrate a traditionally dark subject matter suggests celebration. Woods describes a duality in these locations that suggest a place “where someone might be conceived and, as likely… might expire.” It is this sense of the contested in these paintings that draw us into the works.
The British landscape once spoke of the mythic and Romantic. Clare Woods paints us an alternative view of this history that is both subtle and powerful. The experience of viewing the horizon-like panels become sculptural - in the sense that we struggle to absorb their surfaces in a gaze. Their content however, is narrated with simplicity, as Woods captures a culture in transition merely by speaking through landscape.
The language Woods employs in the work shifts between representation and abstraction, between precision and accident, and image versus the physical nature of the paintings as sculpture. The viewer cannot read the surface in one take, instead they are forced to move in order to see the work fully and, as if looking at a polished bronze, they are drawn into a surface that reflects them and others around them.
All of the works are based on a series of collaged photographs that have been taken in the British landscape. Woods finds this arena emotive and inspirational and uses paint in formally inventive and arresting ways to take the viewer through places that are loaded, seductive and haunting. She continues a long tradition that explores our condition as people who are now largely urbanised and yet increasingly fascinated and affected by representations of landscape.
